Pam McKillop goes above and beyond to make sure that every family at Advocates receives the best support possible. Her role has evolved from member of the Governing Board of the Autism Alliance to Advocates Family Coordinator to Co-Director of the Autism Alliance – not to mention her most important role: parent. Whether she is helping families navigate the complexities of the social services system or spending time with individuals as they enjoy much needed afternoons of recreation, Pam is always eager and available to help. Read on to learn more about how Pam has become one of our most creative caring partners.

Why did you get involved with Advocates?
I first learned about Advocates through my role on the Governing Board of the Autism Alliance. When the Autism Alliance elected to merge with Advocates, I was impressed by everyone I met here. Soon after it was time to choose an agency to support my daughter Kate in her residential placement, and I was thrilled that Advocates had a home that I believed would be a good fit for her. From there, I starting working part-time as the Advocates Family Coordinator and now full-time as both Family Coordinator and Co-Director of the Autism Alliance.

How have you been involved in shaping creative solutions for better lives?
I speak with families at conferences, at workshops, in person and over the phone to try to help them navigate the system and find the right supports for themselves and their loved ones. Helping families develop a vision of the future for and with their loved ones is truly creative work that I am privileged to take part in.

What has been a favorite accomplishment or other highlight of your partnership with Advocates and why?
My favorite accomplishment has been the development of the Fun, Friends and Family recreation series. Getting together each month with individuals, their family members, friends, and staff and watching their interactions while having fun has been very rewarding.

What do you envision for collaborating with Advocates in the future?
I hope to continue bringing the family perspective to all areas of Advocates.

Why do you think partnerships are a key to success when supporting individuals with disabilities or other life challenges?
As the mother of a young woman with Autism, I know that I cannot support her alone. Our partnership with Advocates has allowed both of us to lead fuller lives. I want to help others build these supportive partnerships.

Fun Fact: What would friends and supporters of Advocates be most surprised to learn about you?
That I am an avid Red Sox fan and went to a World Series game in 2013!
