MARLBOROUGH – The Police Department is seeking a clinician for its jail diversion program which helps those with mental illnesses steer from the criminal justice system and into places where they can receive treatment.

Since 2008, the city has partnered with Advocates Inc. for its program, which allows police to have immediate access to a mental health clinician. Jessica Crawford, an Advocates employee who served as the department’s full-time mental health clinician, moved to South Carolina this fall, leaving the position vacant, said Police Chief Mark Leonard.

The clinician is tasked with assessing whether a suspect who commits non-violent or nuisance offenses would benefit from mental health services rather than incarceration, said Leonard.

“The mental health component is critical to identify and get people into the right programs and get the help they need,” the chief said. “It’s a much better approach.”

The clinician also works with the city's code enforcement officer, staff at elderly housing complexes and the senior center to help with crises. Leonard said the department also plans to get the clinician more involved in opioid-related issues.

“Often times there are mental health issues that go with addiction,” said Leonard.

Advocates Inc. and the Marlborough Police have recently advertised the position.

“We would like to get that filled quickly,” said Leonard.

Leonard described the program as very beneficial. Not only do those with mental illness get referred for treatment, but the city’s police officers are able to learn from the clinician how to handle different problems. It also allows officers to get back to their patrol posts faster.

“It’s been very, very successful,” said Leonard. “It’s been a very helpful program.”
